Cavalia/Lungs

Sometimes my job comes with awfully nice perks. Last night I had the chance to attend Cavalia. The show is part Cirque du Soleil part rodeo. Usually media nights are just free tickets, not this time, we were invited to a VIP room backstage before, during intermission and a stable tour afterwards. A dream for any little girl.

Abby was so excited to go to the show. On the way to the show Abby started saying she was getting sick. As we got closer and closer she started coughing more and more. By the time we got to the area she was in full blown croup cough. Ugh.

We were a little late getting there so we rushed through the VIP section met some friends and headed to our seats. Abby coughed through the whole first half. It was miserable. She enjoyed it never the less. At intermission we headed backstage and Abby filled up on sweets. They had a huge selection of chocolate, veggies and cheese, Abby was in heaven. And still coughing. I tried talking to her about going home since the show didn't start until 8p and it was already 9:30p at this point. But we stayed and she loved every second of it. Sitting in her own chair, never complaining despite the constant coughing. I do think the sawdust in the arena also bothered her making the cough even worse.

After the show I tried to tell her it was time to leave but they made announcement about the tours and Abby asked if she could go see the stable. How could I tell her no? She was so excited to see the horses up close. So we stayed, there was a 10 minute question/answer period while the horses were getting cleaned up. There were a few rules about flashed on cameras so my pictures aren't great. By the time we left it was already 11:30pm. Exhaustion was setting in. Abby coughed all the way home. Since it was already so late I just grabbed my pillow and slept on her floor. She was up multiple times overnight and wheezing most of the night.

Side note: It's only been a week since she had a case of croup. Now we didn't go in that weekend, because the doctor on call listened to her breath on the phone and said they wouldn't do anything for her. So we put her in steam and humidifier and the cough went away a few days later.

So when she woke up this morning wheezing I thought it was just from last night so I let it go for awhile. But by 10am she wasn't getting any better. The pediatrician was able to fit us in right away. Last time Abby was at the pedi's office they did a strep test. That freaked Abby out so going back had her pretty upset. The doc was great, she took her time, and she told me right away she wanted to test for the flu so I knew it was going to be bad but thankfully Abby has a running nose. So the doc swapped her snot without sticking the stick up her nose and got the goods. As soon as she listened to Abby breath she ordered a breathing treatment.
She ordered the flu test not only because of Abby's symptoms but because next week is Noah's surgery and  the doctor wanted to make sure if it was the flu we not only treat Abby but also pretreat Noah to keep him healthy.

Abby was apprehensive about the mask but after remembering a pal from school does it everyday it seemed much easier. After the treatment the doctor came back in and listened again. She was really unimpressed with Abby's lung function. So she sent us packing with four days of breathing treatments and a kid size z-pack.
